Abstract
To find a more efficient and practically feasible cationization process for cellulose, periodate oxidation followed by a
reaction with choline chloride was carried out in cotton. FTIR spectra revealed the presence of aldehyde carbonyl
groups in periodate-oxidized cotton. The cationized cotton fabrics were dyed by acid dye to confirm the presence of
cationic groups. Elemental analyses also indicated the presence of cationic groups. In general, oxidation temperature is
an important factor in determining the oxidation effectiveness and, consequently, cationization. This oxidation
cationization process proved to be practically feasible and environmentally desirable as an alternative cationization of
cotton.
